‘Etegami’ Craft Workshop at Imago Gallery in Warren

If you enjoy creative expression, this workshop is for you! Join Imago Foundation for the Arts (IFA) at Imago Gallery at 36 Market Street, Warren, RI, from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 9 for a three-hour workshop to create Etegami, Japanese-style picture postcards that combine images with the written word.

Etegami (“e”= picture; “tegami”= letter) is a Japanese form of mail art that combines simple hand-painted images with words. This modern Japanese folkcraft began in the 1960s as a form of spontaneous and personal expression. Cards can be made for any occasion – friendship, thank you, holiday greetings, birthday, etc.

This one day/ three-hour workshop consists of hands-on and guided activities to create simple watercolor designs combined with written expressions. No previous art experience is needed. In fact, a beginner’s skill is preferred, making it suitable for everyone, including children. You’ll leave the workshop with three to nine personal postcards to send to family and friends.

The workshop will be taught by Gary Heise and Vivian Eyre. Heise is an IFA exhibiting artist who paints in watercolor on rice paper. He is also a painting instructor at East Side Art Center, Pawtucket, RI. Eyre is a poet and author of Ishmael’s Violets published by Kelsay Books. She is an IFA community member and the facilitator for IFA’s Poets in Conversation series.
